One of the top places for instagram in Hong Kong is the rainbow colored estates in Choi Hung

Instagram in Hong Kong? Well, there are already a ton of articles out there about Hong Kong and its Instagram worthiness! Since I have been living in Hong Kong for over 3 years now, I will give it a shot! Hong Kong is such a small place, but it is packed with a lot of things to do and capture for both tourists and residents. I mean, I’ve started my photography journey here and my instagram in Hong Kong, but never run out of photo spots. It is perfect for updating your Instagram or social media profiles and wow your followers!

I will be honest, I haven’t explored Hong Kong as much as I should have. There are many spots like Sai Kung, Fishing Villages, or New Territories that I hear often but haven’t visited. This is the case whenever someone lives somewhere, they delay exploring it because it will always be there. So, this list of instagram-worthy places will definitely evolve as I explore more. Look out for that!

Choi Hung Estate

Okay, Choi Hung Estate is usually the go-to place for people and their instagram in Hong Kong. You can access it via the Choi Hung MTR station. Translated to English, Choi Hung means rainbow. This is a small estate filled with buildings painted in pastel colors. The best known spot for taking photos is by the basketball court on top of a parking building. From below, you can see why it’s made its way as a top instagram spot. The colors of the building match perfectly with your favorite outfit!

Victoria Harbor – The most popular spot for Instagram in Hong Kong?

The Victoria Harbor is among Hong Kong’s best known locations. It’s like the place to be for proving to everyone that you’ve been around. Tons of photos, selfies, and videos are captured here by tourists. Definitely, it is something you would want to showcase to your instagram in Hong Kong! There are many locations for capturing the harbor scene such as in Tamar Park or Tsim Sha Tsui, or even from high above such as the Victoria Peak. Tip: I prefer the vibe in Tamar Park the most because it is quiet and less crowded. Although if you want to see the Symphony of Lights show, you view it from Tsim Sha Tsui or Kowloon. The lights show starts daily at 8pm and taking photos of the harbor with all the lights beaming is something you’d like to show-off.

Graham Street / Central / Sheung Wan

The streets of Sheung Wan and Central are popular for bars, but it is also filled with colorful streets and murals. This place is perfect for some street photography and is worth checking out. I don’t think there’s much for me to say about them actually (and I only have one photo around this area, apparently). Hopefully I can add more photos later on!

Western District Public Cargo Depot a.k.a Instagram Pier

Instagram in Hong Kong? Go to Instagram Pier then! Well, the name says it all, so of course it will be on this list of Instagrammable places. But why is it good for taking photographs?

  1. Well, it provides a great view of the Victoria Harbor.
  2. It is a good location to watch the sunset on a clear day (sorry I don’t have samples yet!).
  3. The cargo materials and equipment around provide a unique subject for photography.
  4. They say it has the unique feature that after rainfall, it becomes the “Mirror of the Sky” where the water on the ground remaining after rainfall will reflect the sky.

The pier is closest to HKU station along the Hong Kong Island Line. Oh, its official name is Western District Public Cargo Working Area. So check that out on Google Maps once you arrive the station.

It is also a common place to do wedding photoshoots. I had the opportunity to collaborate with a bridal dress rental shop in Hong Kong. If you are in Hong Kong and looking for some dresses for styled shooting or for your big day, visit their Instagram for more! Sai Wan Swimming Shed

While we are talking about the Kennedy Town / Sai Wan area, I will include this photo location. It is a 10-15mins walk from the Kennedy Town MTR station and is a common sunset spot for photographers. There will be a relatively long line of people wanting photos for their Instagram profile, so be there 15-20mins before sun down if you want some golden hour photos!

This spot has an interesting view and is not the usual background people think of when in Hong Kong.

Yik Cheong Building a.k.a. Monster Building

Another one that is on the typical list of places for Instagram in Hong Kong, this building is representative of how claustrophobic Hong Kong can get. Hollywood movies such as Transformers: Age of Extinction and Ghost in the Shell featured this place, which increased its popularity for photography and social media. This is a short 5mins walk from the Quarry Bay MTR station.

The photos I took aren’t really the best examples, mainly because of the construction site and it was drizzling that time. I plan to go back there during the night time on a less cloudy day.

Hiking, hiking, and more hiking!

Hong Kong is known for shopping, buildings, crowds, or food. I joked to my friends that I will just visit Disneyland or Ocean Park very often. I was wrong! Locals and some tourists spend their weekends hiking. Hence, most people here are fitter than me. Haha! The views are really beautiful as you can see the densely packed city from a mountain viewing point.

My favorite part about Hong Kong is how you can be in a metropolitan area filled with shops and malls and be in the mountainside or beach area within 1-2 hours by bus or train. If you are patient enough to go on a 3-5hr hike around the city, just take your pick! There are loads of unique trails around. Definitely something to consider when updating your instagram in hong kong.

I did a previous post about sunrise or sunset hikes in Hong Kong so check it out for more landscape scenes. If you want some hikes that are less known, check these trails out! They’re instagrammable too! Also, my friend hosts an Airbnb experience at Braemar Hill (the first photo!). Check-out her instagram as well (@marianne0109)

Artlane – new discovery for Instagram in Hong Kong!

A small block filled with colorful designs, murals, and street art, Artlane is perfect for anyone’s instagram page. It is also very accessible to as it sits beside exit B3 of Sai Ying Pun MTR station. Sai Ying Pun is also home to a number of good cafes, shops, and restaurants, do check them out while you are in the area!
